Zehal-e miskin makun taghaful – Amir Khusro

by Vikram 12 years ago
written by Vikram

An excellent Qawwali from Amir Khusrau depicting how persian and Indian culture intermingled in the mughal era. First part of each verse is in Farsi and the second part is in Awadhi.

Zehal-e miskin makun taghaful,
baraye naina banaye batiyan;
ki taab-e hijran nadaram ay jaan,
na leho kaahe lagaye chhatiyan.

Do not overlook my misery by blandishing your eyes,
and weaving tales; My patience has over-brimmed,
O sweetheart, why do you not take me to your bosom.

Shaban-e hijran daraz chun zulf
wa roz-e waslat cho umr kotah;
Sakhi piya ko jo main na dekhun
to kaise kaatun andheri ratiyan.

Long like curls in the night of separation,
short like life on the day of our union;
My dear, how will I pass the dark dungeon night
without your face before.

Yakayak az dil do chashm-e jadoo
basad farebam baburd taskin;
Kise pari hai jo jaa sunaave
piyare pi ko hamaari batiyan.

Suddenly, using a thousand tricks,
the enchanting eyes robbed me
of my tranquil mind;
Who would care to go and report this matter to my darling?

Cho sham’a sozan cho zarra hairan
hamesha giryan be ishq aan meh;
Na neend naina na ang chaina
na aap aaven na bhejen patiyan.

Tossed and bewildered, like a flickering candle,
I roam about in the fire of love;
Sleepless eyes, restless body,
neither comes she, nor any message.

Bahaqq-e roz-e wisal-e dilbar
ki daad mara ghareeb Khusrau;
Sapet man ke waraaye raakhun
jo jaaye paaon piya ke khatiyan.

In honour of the day I meet my beloved
who has lured me so long, O Khusrau;
I shall keep my heart suppressed,
if ever I get a chance to get to her trick.

Ab’ul Hasan Yamīn ud-Dīn Khusrow (1253–1325 CE) Hindi अमीर खुसरो, (Urdu: ابوالحسن یمین‌الدین خسرو‎;, better known as Amīr Khusrow (also Khusrau, Khusro) Dehlawī (meaning Amir Khusrow of Delhi) (امیر خسرو دہلوی) was a Sufi musician, great poet and scholar. A polymath an iconic figure in the cultural history of the Indian subcontinent. A mystic and a spiritual disciple of Nizamuddin Auliya of Delhi. Amīr Khusrow was not only a notable poet but also a prolific and seminal musician in the time of the Delhi Sultanate, being reputed to have invented both the Sitar and the Tabla. He wrote poetry primarily in Persian, but also in Hindavi. A vocabulary in verse, the Ḳhāliq Bārī, containing Arabic, Persian, and Hindavi terms is often attributed to him.[2]

He is regarded as the “father of Qawwali“ (the devotional music of the Sufis in the Indian subcontinent).Introduced the Ghazal style of song into India. These traditions have been kept very much alive in India and Pakistan to this day.[3][4] He is also credited with enriching Indian classical music by introducing Persian, Arabic and Turkish elements into it and was the originator of the khayal and tarana styles of music.

Freedom of Privacy

by Vikram 12 years ago
written by Vikram

UNPUBLISHED

I don’t think we have freedom of privacy any more. From the nosy neighbour, to the gatekeeper, to the electrician, all the way up to the governments (both native and foreign), even one is trying to know every thing about us. They don’t just want to know every thing about us, they want to categorize and classify what we are, what we are, what we stand for, our political colors, our racial biases, or sexual preferences, our relataion ships etc., etc., etc., they want to know it all.

Remember, even as young kids we used t0 sensor (or hide) some of what we told them about our day in school. Usually we told more to our mother then father. We made those judgement calls even as kids. Those small descisions of not to tell a particular thing to our parent was part of a freedom that we exercised. And remember when

They who have put out
the peoples eyes
reproach them
of their blindness

Area Man Denied Gym Membership

by Vikram 13 years ago
written by Vikram

Area Man Denied Gym Membership, originally uploaded by hpk. According to latest reports area man Jamil Ahmed (name changed) was denied membership to the local gym (name with held). Jamil accused that he was asked to produce recommendations from a respected member of the society before he would be allowed to pump iron along with the local hunks. Things grew ugly when Jamil, who is an actor by profession and has been a resident of the society (name withheld) since birth, was again denied membership when he produced verbal recommendation from a respected member of the society. Jamil was asked by Gokul das, gym proprietor, to get written recommendation from a respectable member of the society. Anahita, a budding actress and a regular member of the gym, testified “I don’t know what the fuss is about, Gokul uncle was so nice with me, no really”. Another member, only identified as aunty lobo, said, “I’ve know Jamil since he was a kid. He’s as ordinary as they come. No idea why they don’t want him there.”However, Unmesh shukla, another society resident questioned Jamil’s sudden interest in the gym. He said, “I’ve seen the boy since he was a kid, he never showed any interest in body building activities, but off late, he’s been coming late at night, dressing up, and acting all religious and stuff. This is not normal behavior and we must investigate.”Society chairman, Mr. Bansal Suri, categorically denied the rumors that Jamil’s tenant agreement would be revoked and said, “So far we have no reasons to ask Jamil to leave the society. The gyms decision while unfortunate must be looked into in its entirety. After all, they must have has a reason to deny membership.”

Gym authorities were unavailable for comment when contacted.

I choose love

by Vikram 16 years ago
written by Vikram

So in his Oscar acceptance speech, A R Rehman humbled us all by saying something life thus… “All my life I had a choice between love and hate. I chose love and I am here.” Its easy to be swayed by the hatemongers of the world, very easy to believe we are under threat from this community or that. But the only people we are under threat from is this hate mongering community of toxic leaders and demagogues. I hope more people choose love over hate. At least I’ll try.

Patriotism 101

by Vikram 18 years ago
written by Vikram

So the other we celebrated the 60th anniversary of our independence (August 15th). I am glad to see even the rich and upper middle class people are now proud to be Indian etc. They even show a TV ad in which the guy refuses a foreign companies offer, goes around driving a bike, etc… pretty cool.

So anyway, I myself am not upto the mark on the patriotic meter, at least not by our Indian Nazi standards, but I do have a small list of patriotic-to-do-list which I try to-do from time to time. So no wanting to keep away from the prevailing hurrah of our 60th independence anniversary I hear by share my list:

  • – Be nice
  • – Be honest
  • – Be on time (I wish…)
  • – Save electricity
  • – Save oil
  • – Save water
  • – Save food
  • – Vote
  • – Use Right to Information (RTI 2005)
  • – Follow traffic rules
  • – Don’t pay beggars
  • – Deliver value for money
  • – Avoid littering public places
  • – Not be a Nazi (Hindu/Muslim/certainly not Christian/etc/etc/whatever/etc…)

Having a list doesn’t mean I follow all the above, but I try.
